A medical I.D tag is a small emblem or tag worn within a
bracelet,
neck chain
, on the clothing or in the shape of a
watch with an important message about a medical condition that might require some
immediate attention. The intention is to alert a paramedic, physician, emergency department personnel or whoever is first on the scene, of the condition even if the wearer is not conscious or old
enough to explain the potential severity of the situation.
In addition to mentioning the condition, the tag in whatever form may have an emergency telephone number that medical personnel can call for more information, such as specific medications and phone
number of physician or carer. Effectively, a medical I.D, engraved with the wearer's personal medical problem or history, speaks for the wearer when the wearer can't and potentially saves the wearers life.
It could also come in handy as proof of such a condition to law enforcement personnel.
There are various types of
medical ID available. The most common of which is medical I.D jewellery which has a logo or
inscription with the particular medical condition. Medical identification tags such as
these can be made from stainless steel, known as surgical stainless steel, sterling silver or gold. The wearer's special medical needs will be notified immediately by the paramedics or other doctors. Such
medical I.Ds are available pre-engraved with the conditions or can be custom engraved with your specific medical history and or conditions. They also have the benefit of all information that is self-contained
and does not require any form of technology to view in case of an emergency.
Another form of medical ID jewellery could indicate membership in a medical information organization such as the MedicAlert Foundation. Such medical ID jewellery includes a member I.D number and a
free to phone number for the paramedic or whoever to contact the organization and collect the relevant vital information about the wearer's medical condition, how to treat the condition, and the
wearers history. Such organisations have a database of medical information about their members and can provide it to medical personnel when requested.
