Food Allergy and Intolerance Week runs from 23rd-29th January 2012. Allergy UK are looking to raise awareness, not just the physical effects of having a food intolerance but how it can impact social aspects of life.
They will be providing help, information and support throughout the week for anyone who would like to have a better understanding of Food Allergies.
Alarmingly, nearly a quarter (24%) of UK adults see people with a food allergy or intolerance as "fussy". The aim of this week is to raise awareness of how potentially life threatening food allergies can be.
The thought of doing the weekly shop for anyone can be a dreaded one, but for people with food allergies it is even worse. Checking ingredients and planning meals for the week can take up a lot of time. Thanks to the new App FoodWiz, the lives of people who suffer from food allergy or intolerance are changed dramatically. Just by scanning the barcode of food products whilst in the supermarket you are told immediately if it is safe to eat, making shopping with an allergy or intolerance so much easier. The App is programmable with details of your particular foods that you need to avoid and can function without a signal.
If you don't own such a state of the art mobile, don't worry; both Asda and Tesco are providing vital product information on their own brand goods along with thousands of brand name products. This is hopefully going to make shopping with an allergy quicker and easier.
Thousands of people suffer from food allergy, and food intolerance related symptoms such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Coeliac Disease, Migraine, Eczema and joint pains etc. This is where Allergy UK can help. Food Allergy and Intolerance Awareness Week supported this year by Rice Dream and the Rainforest Café, both aiming to raise awareness for people living with these conditions.
Advice on how to shop is one of the biggest concerns of people contacting Allergy UK. With already restricted diets, alternatives to everyday foods such as milk are necessities. Help is out there for people to find such alternatives.
Rice Dream, one of the Food Allergy and Intolerance Week's supporters recognise that many people have an intolerance to milk. From this Rice Dream have designed and made milk alternative products made from rice.
The Rainforest Cafe, another of The Food Allergy and Intolerance Week supporters caters for people with these food related conditions. The cafe serves food designed around people living with food allergies, so eating out doesnt have to be a pain.
